The ‘Enigma’ Code-breaking Machine: Tuesday, 24th November at 7.00 p.m.

As part of our Science and Maths specialist status programme, the Mathematics Department is holding a code-
breaking day on Tuesday 24th November. We are delighted to be welcoming to the school Dr James Grime of the
University of Cambridge, who will bring the mathematics of code-breaking into the classroom. Year Eight students
will have the opportunity to explore cryptography and meet ciphers used throughout history from Ancient Greece to
WW2. Students will also be able to see a genuine WW2 Enigma machine.

In the evening we would like to invite interested parents and/or students in Year Nine or above to listen to the
lecture and discover some of the mysteries behind the Enigma Machine and its use in World War II. The
presentation is due to start at 7.00 p.m. in the School Hall and should last for about 90 minutes, including a brief
question and answer session.

There will be a small charge of £3.00 per adult for the evening presentation. As we anticipate the event being very
popular, if you would like to book tickets, please complete the form below and return to school reception with
your payment (cheques made payable to CRGS) by no later than Thursday 19th November. (Tickets should
be collected by students from Reception 24 hours later.)

Parking will be available in the main close with access via Creffield Road.
