Immigrants would go to the Main Building for legal and medical examinations upon arrival. Early medical exams were cursory and lasted around six seconds, but by the early 1900s full medical exams were required for all immigrants to determine if they had any physical or mental conditions that would prevent them from entering the country. The process of examination, money exchange, and feeding at concession stands usually took around 5 hours to complete.
