housing one of the largest
slum in the Asia – Dharavi.
• Here are few less-known facts.

MIGRATION FOR SURVIVAL
 Kumbhar potters from Saurashtra
(Gujarat),
 Tanners from Tamil Nadu and
Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh),
 leather and textile workers from
Maharashtra and Bihar,
 Valmiki street sweepers from
Haryana.
 Tamilians form almost 55 per
cent of Dharavi's close to four
lakh population, followed by
Marathi speaking-people (20 per
cent) and the remaining
comprising Muslims and North
Indians

Slum Rehabilitation
Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) was established on 15th
December 1995.
Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP).
Govt. of Maharashtra accepted the proposal submitted by Architech,
Mr. Mukesh Mehta and implemented through the SRA norms.
Objectives:
•Slum dwellers living prior to 01.01.1995 are eligible for
rehabilitation.
•Eligible slum dweller will be allotted self contained house of
225.sq.ft. carpet area free of cost.
•Plan has many amenities in it; viz. wider roads, electricity, ample
water supply, playgrounds, schools, colleges, medical center, socio
culture centers etc.
