Lesson XX Sums on the number line.

1. Addition
There are 46 learners in Grade 3. Today they will have a visit from 24
Grade 2 learners. How many chairs are needed?

Mothudi says:
I must add 24. I’ll start by +10 +10 +4
adding ten which bring me to
56; then I’ll jump another ten
to 66. Now I must jump four 46 56 66 70
more, and I land at 70.
Manare says:
First I’ll jump 4. That will +4 +20
bring me to 50. From 50 I can
jump 20 more which brings me
to 70. 46 50 70
Helen says:
+20 +4
From 46 I can jump 20. That
brings me to 66. Now I have to
jump four more and then I
reach 70. 46 66 70

What do you say? Work out this sum on the number line. Be sure to
label your drawing like the number lines above to show the number
you’re on and the size of the jump.

63 + 17 =
2. Subtraction. -2 -3 -10 -10-5 -3 -10
-10
The class needs 53 rulers. So far they have 35. How many more do
they need? 53 – 35 = ?
Helen says: 18 20 23 3335 4043 43 53
53
Subtraction
means to take
away. So I’ll
start at 53 and
take away 35.
I’ll take away
to 23. Now take away five – first’ll take away 3, and I come to 20. Take away 2
more and I get to 18. We need 18 more rulers.
Manare says:
Subtraction
means find the
difference
between 53 and +10 +5 +3
35. I’ll start at
53 and count
down to 35. If
I count back by 35 45 50 53 53
10, I get to 43, counting back 3 more brings me to 40, then I need to go back 5
more to get to 35. Ten plus 3 plus five is 18. We need 18 more rulers.

Mothudi says:
I can start at 35
and see how
many jumps it
takes me to
count up to 53. Ten plus five plus three is 18. We need 18 more rulers.
Try it yourself. 42 – 27 = ?
You can take away,
count up or count
down. Use the way
that makes most
sense to you.
42 – 27 = ?
Solve this problem
on the number line.
Be sure to label the
jumps and numbers
on the number line.
