How to Solve One-Step Multiplication and

Division Equations

Step One: Write the equation

Examples: n = 7 -5x = 12
-2

Step Two: Isolate the variable by performing the

inverse operation by using the division or
multiplication properties of equality.
(Remember, the inverse means to do the opposite)

Examples: -2 x n = 7 x -2 -5x = 12
-2 -5 -5

Step Three: Cancel out.

Examples: -2 x n = 7 x -2 -5x = 12
-2 -5 -5

Step Four: Simplify for the equivalent equation.

Examples: -2 x n = 7 x -2 -5x = 12
-2 -5 -5
n = -14 x = - 2.4

Step Five: Check your work!

Examples: -14 = 7 -5 x -2.4 (-2 2/5) = 12
-2 12 = 12
7=7
