What is Marketing?
• Shortest definition “Meeting needs profitably”

• Marketing is about identifying the particular

wants and needs of a target market of
customers, and satisfying those customers
better than the competitors.

• It involves doing market research on customers,

analyzing their needs, and then making strategic
decisions about product design, pricing,
promotion and distribution.
Marketing is about Customers
• Marketing is a philosophy that stresses the importance of
customer satisfaction.

• It involves understanding customers behaviour, their

perception and preferences.

• Helps in building a solid and sustained relationship.

• The aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous. It is

to know and understand customer so well that the
product or service sells itself.
What is selling?
• Selling is the art of closing a deal.

• Selling is persuading/ convincing people to buy things

they may or may not want or need.

• Selling is the process of helping someone discover

something of value.
• Marketing - what products companies have to
offer.

• Selling - products co.s have to offer are of value

to customer.
Marketing
• Called out by the brand...not by the actual product
name.
• Eg. – Xerox,Mcdonalds
• Getting people interested/familiar to the “brand“ of
their product.
• Comfortable with hearing the brand, saying the brand,
asking about the brand and finally find a NEED for just
that brand.
• Most thought out component of any large selling
campaign
Selling
• Fine tuning the brand / product / service to fit customer
needs exclusively.
• Create a lifetime loyal product / service users
• Should always be done with the utmost respect, trust
and honor.
• Consumer decides that product that has been
marketed to them is really what they need
Referrals

• Product marketed-creates a reason for the customers

to go for repeat purchases
• Can’t happen if co.s haven’t been able to deliver what
they marketed their product to do.
• Word of mouth
Interlinkage
• Companies may have the greatest product
out on the market today, but if not
communicated people in a caring and
comfortable way, they will never get the
chance to the co. and people who don’t know
the co. will not buy from it!
