The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication
techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
Rationale
Assignment for FL561,” that I created for FL561 Teaching Second Languages: Theory into
Practice. This 50-minute lesson plan was designed for a fictitious adult ESL advanced listening
and speaking class at a local community college. The plan was loosely based on a book by Keith
S. Folse called “Discussion Starters: Speaking Fluency Activities for Advanced ESL/EFL
Students.” The plan features a very controversial and timely topic “Should Marijuana be a
Medical Option?” It requires the students to watch a video called “The Marijuana State” and use
a K/W/L graphic organizer to take notes during the video. The students fill out the K (Know) &
W (Want to Know) sections by themselves, and then work in groups to fill out the L (Want to
Learn) section. The final activity asks each group to give a 1 1/2 minute (maximum) presentation
on what they learned about marijuana in the video and whether or not this knowledge affected
The lesson plan was created in Microsoft PowerPoint and its design utilized my creative
skills, in addition to the academic knowledge required for the actual lesson. Dr. Burnett, my
professor for FL561, liked the lesson plan, but felt that 50 minutes was not enough for such
complex topic; which is something important for me to remember when creating lesson plans in

my future classroom - allow more time or condense the topic/activities. I am including this
media communication techniques such as PowerPoint and videos to create lesson plans that
foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the ESL classroom.
