Topic : Algebra (Function Machine)

Year: 7

Specific objective:

 Students will be able to understand the function concept through the

“Machine” metaphor
Learning outcome:

 After doing the activity the students able to solve the problem by
observing output of the function.

Introduction
FUNCTION OF THE MACHINE
This virtual manipulative is designed to teach the concept of a function by
allowing you to experiment with various functions.

1. Observe the output of a function by dragging numbers from the top left
corner to the IN chute of the function machine. The function machine
will process the number and produce an output value.
2. The student will make a guess what function the machine is using by
observing the output.
3. The student use their guess to decide what the remaining entries of the
table should be and type them into the boxes.

After the numbers have been dragged in the machine, the students will
know what the function is.

1=3

2=3+3

3=3+3+3

4=3+3+3+3

Therefore, in order to find what is the missing for 5, 6 and 7 are:

5 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 +3 Ans:15

6 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 Ans: 18

7 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 Ans: 21

OR

Another solution to find the missing numbers are:

5 =X

X= 12 +3 =15

6=X

X= 15 + 3 = 18

7=X

X= 18 + 3 = 21
4. BUT REMEMBER, if one of their entries doesn’t match the computer
function, the student will get an error message.

However, the student can still try another answer until the answer is
match the computer function.
3. Students can try more questions given by clicking “New Function” to try a
new function.
