Background
 Slavery has existed since ancient times in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
 The Trans-Atlantic slave trade (white Europeans selling black Africans in the
Americas) began in the 1500’s. Slaves were transported from Africa to the
Americas across the Atlantic Ocean. This trade is incredibly profitable and many
people build their fortunes on the back of others’ suffering

nations, their American colonies, and Africa
 Middle Passage: brutal middle leg of the “Triangle Trade”
where slaves were brought across the Atlantic Ocean from
Africa to colonies in the New World
