After years of an adulterous affair that produced a child, “Big Tim” Sullivan, the
legendary Bowery political boss and actress Margaret Holland -- Seven Sisters graduate
and family outcast – find themselves inextricably bound by the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
of 1911. In the bitter aftermath of 146 lost lives -- mainly Jewish woman and girls – the
pair fights to liberate workers from sweatshop labor even as he’s losing his mind to
syphilis.
JACK GILHOOLEY is a proud New Dramatist alum and the recipient of 2 NEAs
(Individual Artist and International -- Centaur Theatre, Montreal), NYFTA, 4 FL State
artist grants, 2 Fulbright guest artist fellowships (Spain and Ireland), National
Playwrights’ Conf (O’Neill TC), 2 Puffin Foundation grants, Pilgrim Project, PEN,
Carnegie Foundation awards. THREE PLAYS published by Broadway Play Publishing.
DANIEL CZITROM is Professor of History at Mount Holyoke College and author of
Rediscovering Jacob Riis; Media and the American Mind; and co-author of Out of Many:
A History of the American People. He has appeared as a featured commentator in
numerous PBS productions, including New York: A Documentary Film.
“Fire! hits a home run in its depiction of the Triangle Fire and some of the great welders
of the burgeoning American society at the dawn of that century. The characters are
striking, tough and larger than life. In addition to showing how such characters affected
and molded what would turn out to be one of America's greatest leaders and humanists,
FDR. Would they were alive today to continue that molding and shaping. The play
deeply affected me." Edward Asner
Of the playwrights’ previous collaboration, RED BESSIE, Keith Miller, Times Literary
Supplement, wrote, “Red Bessie is clear-headed and humane, not unaware of the hurt that
political idealism can cause, and more fun than might be expected of such a high-minded
project.”
