Instruction: Use the theoretical framework on Bernoulli equation, Pressure Measurement and
Continuity Equation to solve the following problems.

1. Water flows at the rate of 200 l/s upward through a tapered vertical pipe. The
diameter at the bottom is 240 mm and at the top 200mm and the length is 5m. The
pressure at the top side is 7.3 bars; the pressure at the bottom is 8 bars. Determine the
head loss through the pipe. Express it as a function of exit velocity.

2. A water main pipe (P1) has an internal diameter of 100mm, and has water flowing
through it with a mean velocity of 2.5m/s. it then branches out into two other pipes
(P2) and (P3); such that P2 takes 35% of the total discharge. If pipes P2 and P3 have
internal diameters of 80mm and 60mm respectively, what are the values of discharge
and mean velocity in each of these pipes?

3. A ‘U’- Tube manometer containing mercury of density13600 kg/m3 is used to

measure the pressure drop along a horizontal pipe. If the fluid in the pipe has a
relative density of 0.8 a manometer reading of 0.6. What is the pressure difference
measured by the manometer?
