It’s A Wonderful Broadcast
KRCB-FM and The Raven Radio Players proudly
present a live radio broadcast of the treasured holiday
classic It’s A Wonderful Life. The performance will
be broadcast live from KRCB’s Studio J at 8 pm on
Thursday, December 16th.
Directed by Gregory Ketchum, who also did the
script adaptation of the beloved 1946 Frank Capra
film, this production marks the second live radio
collaboration between KRCB and the Raven Players.
For Halloween 2008 Radio 91 broadcast their live
performance of Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds, live
from the Raven Theater stage.
In It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey wants desperately to leave his hometown of Bedford
Falls for a life of travel and adventure, but he is called on to put his dreams aside and care for
family and friends. Through the tragic carelessness of a family member, George is threat-
ened with public and financial humiliation, and jail. Determined upon suicide, George is
saved through the intercession of an angel, who shows him what his hometown would have
become without his efforts. In addition to Ketchum as George Bailey, the cast includes noted
Healdsburg thespians Bonnie Jean Shelton, Audie Foote and Diane Dearmore.
Step back in time with George, Mary, mean old Mr. Potter, and Clarence, the guardian
angel. And remember, “Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.”

KRCB in the community
A Change in the Morning on Radio 91
After three years of waking
up to Lizzie Hannon’s voice on
KRCB-FM and then listening
to her in the car as we went to
work, we now hear a different
—although familiar—voice.
Lizzie has taken on a new
challenge in her life, a job that
meant she had to leave KRCB.
Although sorry to see her go,
we wish her well. Lizzie has promised us that she will return
to the studio to reprise her original and persuasive role during our membership drives. Thank
you, Lizzie, for being such a positive force at KRCB; we miss you!
So who is the other familiar voice you now hear in the early morning? None other than
Mark Prell, who for the past year has been our late afternoon and early evening announcer—
his voice is the one you hear as your workday is ending. In other words, should you get
confused and wonder if you are coming or going, you’ll be quickly set straight by Mark’s
clear and reassuring voice. Mark started out as a volunteer whose talents and enthusiasm
were quickly recognized. He is very excited to be able to work full time at KRCB, fulfilling
his dream of being a public radio announcer with a voice people recognize any time of day.
Congratulations Mark on your new role at KRCB!

Dear Member,
It is not uncommon these days to run into a supporter of KRCB and be asked, “So,
how are things going?” “Things” being understood to mean are we making ends meet
in the continuing tough economic environment? I am happy to give you an update.
For starters, we have been very conservative in our budgeting, assuming flat revenues
in our main income categories of membership, underwriting, and auction. We’ve met
those targets this year, with the community’s support. What we’ve noticed in member-
ship, for example, is that while some have had to drop or reduce their support,
others have stepped up and increased theirs. We have also been fortunate in the past 18
months to receive unexpected bequests that have been vital to our financial health.
You should also know that the staff has been making a major sacrifice to make it all
work. All staff have been on furlough over the past year - 1 day off
every 6 weeks - so reduced pay to take home. And although we
have been equally conservative in our spending, we have still
had to borrow a bit out of our reserves to finally make it all
work.
All the same, KRCB been luckier than many of our fellow
public broadcasters and non-profits in thus far successfully
navigating the shoals. You are part of the reason for that
success and for that we are most appreciative. Have a
wonderful holiday season.

American Masters: Lennon NYC
In October 2010, John Lennon would have been 70
years old. In December 2010, he will have been dead
for 30 years. Yet, his art still haunts us. It still matters
deeply and it is still deeply relevant. It still speaks to
millions of people. This film establishes Lennon as an
American artist. It is, essentially, a classic immigrant
tale: Lennon and Ono left London in 1971 in search
of freedom, both artistic and personal. We hear
Lennon’s song “New York City” and follow into their
life—their commitment to peace and political activism,
their struggles to remain in America and, of course, the
greatest music from that period and the concert footage
from Lennon’s first two albums, Plastic Ono Band and
Imagine.
With unprecedented and exclusive cooperation from
Yoko Ono, access to never-before-seen material from
the Lennon archives and conversations with those
closest to him—Ono, Elton John, the photographer
Bob Gruen, Ringo Starr—American Masters tells John Lennon’s story as it has never been
told before—and as it will never be told again. Wednesday, December 8 at 8 pm

Climate One Commomwealth Club Forums

• With the Deepwater Horizon oil well capped, attention has shifted to preventing another
blowout. Jane Lubchenco, Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, and Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental
Quality, answered questions about the Deepwater Horizon fallout, President Obama’s
new oceans policy, and the future of the oceans for a Climate One audience in San
Francisco.
• A “perfect storm” of policy and incentives has made 2010 a banner year for solar in
California, but for the boom to continue in the state and the rest of the United States,
major obstacles need to be cleared, according to a panel of experts. The panelists—Karen
Douglas, Chair of the California Energy Commission, BrightSource President and CEO
John Woolard, and Lisa Hoyos, California State Coordinator, Apollo Alliance—all
cautioned that the absence of a coherent, stable, and long-term national clean energy
policy is holding back the industry.
• Lamenting feckless governments, and politicians who
back “patently inadequate” bills, climate scientist
and Director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space
Studies Dr. James E. Hansen told a Climate One audi-
ence that Washington needs a wake-up call. Time is
too short to delay action on climate change, he said,
warning of more frequent and severe extreme weather
events.

Great Performances: Sondheim!

The Birthday Concert
From his early years under the tutelage
of friend and mentor Oscar Hammerstein
II, Stephen Sondheim has been a singular
voice in the American musical theater, a true
original in the pantheon of major American
songwriters and composers. Beginning with
his collaborations as lyricist on such fabled
shows as West Side Story and Gypsy, to his
breakthrough scores for Company, Follies,
A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday
in the Park with George, and Into the Woods,
Sondheim led the way from Broadway’s
golden age into the increasingly ambivalent
times of America’s post-Vietnam, rock ‘n’ roll
culture.

Curtain Call Celebrates 15 Years of Arts Interviews
With doors open to a warm, sunny autumn day in 1995,
Charles Sepos hosted the zany Reduced Shakespeare Company
in a tiny temporary radio studio behind KRCB Television.
Amidst the imaginary world conjured up in their banter was a
left-over pledge premium: a roll of KRCB-embossed toilet pa-
per. Since then, Curtain Call has aired every Friday from noon
to 1 on KRCB 91 FM, with less ridiculous, always diverse, and
often sublime conversations on creativity and the arts.
Guests have included vocalists Bobby McFerrin, Janis Ian,
and Carol Channing; divas Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Fred-
erica Von Stade; blues guitar legend Robert Cray; jazz masters
Dave Brubeck and Michael Brecker; performance artist Laurie
Anderson; composers Jerry Herman (Hello Dolly, Mame),
Peter Schickele (aka P. D. Q. Bach) and John Corigliano;
Kronos, and Takacs String Quartets; and violinists Joshua Bell
and Hilary Hahn. When asked what he wished to be called on
the air, violinist Pinchas Zukerman responded “Itzhak
Perlman.”
It is a passion of Charles Sepos to explore the creative process in all the arts; another
passion is to inform, connect and energize people and communities around the arts. He
accomplishes both as he brings great artists to the airwaves on Curtain Call. Sepos also hosted
Curtain Call Television on KRCB-TV from April 2001 to December 2003.
The remarkable breadth of the Curtain Call guest list over the past decade and a half also
includes vocal groups Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Anonymous 4; pianists Lang Lang,
Andre Watts and Garrick Ohlsson; guitarists Ottmar Liebert and Doc Watson; comedian
Mark Russell; Indian sarod master Ali Akbar Khan; author Anne Lamott; American Ballet
Theater; mandolinist David Grisman; flutist Sir James Galway; and innumerable others.
Curtain Call is heard every Friday from noon to 1 pm on KRCB-FM.

Charles Sepos is a composer and master teacher of piano, composition, theory and music
appreciation throughout the Bay Area. You can find out more on his website www.transcende.com.

Climate One: Food, Science, Politics and Corporate structure
December 2 – The Climate Fix
What’s the most efficient way to minimize the impacts of climate change? Public policy?
Massive funding of new technology? Buying off emerging countries that will soon emit most
of the world’s carbon pollution? University of Colorado professor Roger Pielke, who is affili-
ated with The Breakthrough Institute, is critical of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change. He’ll explain why and offer his take on the state of climate science.
December 9 – Calories and Carbon
Improving our eating habits is one of the best ways to reduce our environmental and
carbon footprint, while also trimming our waistlines. How do we get the biggest bang for
our dietary bucks? How important is buying local food? What protein alternatives produce
the lowest carbon footprints? Join us for a discussion about Environmental Working Group’s
latest research, in partnership with CleanMetrics, examining the “cradle to grave” carbon
footprint of different kinds of food.
December 16 – Science as a Contact Sport
How are the venomous personal attacks on climate scientists impacting their work? Is the
scrutiny causing them to be even more cautious than they are by nature? What needs to be
done to make scientists better public communicators? Join us for a discussion of politics and
science in the age of “global weirding.”
December 23 – Why Family Dinners Matter
Research has shown that children who have regular
dinners together with their parents do better in almost all
areas of life, from higher grades in school to maintaining
loving relationships, to avoiding bad behaviors like drugs,
alcohol, and promiscuity. Laurie David, producer of An
Inconvenient Truth, and author of the new book, The
Family Dinner, presents practical and inspirational ways to
keep your family at the table.
December 30 – New Corporate Form: A Viable Gamechanger for Sustainability
A primary contributor of the BP oil spill that has not been closely examined is BP’s struc-
ture as a corporation. A growing movement in the U.S. and overseas seeks to create a new
corporate form that would integrate social and environmental factors more deeply into the
DNA of corporations. Mac Cormac, principal author of the Flexible Purpose Corporation
(SB1463) bill now in the California Senate, will be joined by CEOs for a lively discussion of
the impacts of such groundbreaking change.

Opera Sunday for December

Opera Sunday concludes a four-year-long cycle (it only seems that long)
of Wagner’s Ring Cycle this year with Götterdämerung. In the last opera
in the cycle, the characters all assemble for the grand finale of love and
betrayal, oaths and oath-breakers, the curse of the ring falling on every-
one. Brunhilde and Valhalla go up in flames, and the Ring returns to the
Rhine maidens. Tune in on Sunday, December 5 for a classic perfor-
mance conducted by Sir Georg Solti, and starring Wolfgang Windgassen,
Birgit Nilsson (rt), Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and Gottlob Frick. And
join us on Sunday, January 2 for Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus.

Radio 91 remembers John Lennon
In recognition of the 30th anniversary of the death of
John Lennon, KRCB offers three programs that reflect
on the enduring music of the former Beatle, and the
effect it has had on generations of listeners.
First, this month’s Flashback program features a full
hour of Lennon’s music drawn from throughout his
creative lifetime. You’ll hear from the Beatles (of course),
the Plastic Ono Band and even a surprise guest appear-
ance from Dr. Winston O’Boogie, with a mixture of
favorites, live tracks, deep catalog cuts and more.
Flashback airs on Tuesday, December 7 at 7 pm.
The Day John Lennon Died
It was on December 8, 1980, that John Lennon was shot and killed outside of his New
York City apartment building by a deluded fan. Producer Paul Ingles asked various people to
recall how they heard the news and what John Lennon’s music meant to them. This program
also includes excerpts from an interview John and Yoko Ono gave the morning of December
8, just hours before his murder. Wednesday, December 8 at 7 pm
Then on Connections, hosts Doug Jayne and Allegra Broughton continue the musical
memorial with “The Unheard John Lennon,” two hours of rarities, out-takes and more,
beginning at 8 pm on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Festivities abound on E-town in December
December 6 – Mumford & Sons / Danielle Ate the Sandwich
This week, Mumford & Sons (rt) brings their unique sound
all the way from London. The young and spirited quartet share
their earnest and high energy folk-rock sound. Also taking the
stage is Danielle Ate the Sandwich (that’s Danielle Anderson
and her band), who has built an impressive internet fan-base
in a relatively short amount of time with her great singing and
quirky, charming original tunes.

December 13 – Lyle Lovett / Taj Mahal – Green Rocks Part 1

This special two-part broadcast brings together great music
and green music events at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
This year we’re thrilled to have two truly amazing
musical guests with us, Lyle Lovett and Taj Mahal (rt).

December 20 – Lyle Lovett / Taj Mahal – Green Rocks

In part 2 of the Green Rocks at Red Rocks show you’ll hear
exciting live performances and up-close-and-personal artist in-
terviews. There’s more music from Lyle Lovett and Taj Mahal,
plus an in-depth interview with Colorado’s governor Bill Ritter.

December 27 – Indigo Girls /TBA

This week we are thrilled to welcome back one of our
favorite groups, the Indigo Girls (rt). The group will play some
familiar hit favorites as well as music from their brand new
seasonal CD Holly Happy Days. As always, there will
also be another great musical guest – TBA.

some of the amazing non-profit organizations in Sonoma County that
support the LGBT community. Make a gift donation to one of these
non-profits in the name of a loved one and we will read your holiday greet-
ing on the air. On Outbeat Youth, Greg Miraglia highlights another local high school GSA.

A Special Opportunity
There are so many things to love about this time of year
—golden leaves on the trees, the crispness of the air, and
the rich texture of holiday decorations. Supporting all
these seasonal delights are the things that bring richness
and meaning to our lives. I know that you, our family of
supporters, consider KRCB to be a part of that richness
and meaning throughout the year.

That’s why I am asking you, during this special time of

year, to make an additional gift to KRCB, a gift over and
above your regular membership contribution. Your
additional gift of $100, $75, or $50 assures that
KRCB not only meets your listening and viewing
needs, but exceeds them.

Send your tax-deductible contribution today or give us a call at 584-2000. You’ll hear
and see your dollars at work every time you tune in to KRCB.

KRCB volunteer of the month

David Templeton
December’s Volunteer of the Month demonstrates
the wealth of talent in our bank of volunteers.
David Templeton is a gifted writer/performer/
producer who has collaborated on multiple
creative projects with KRCB over the last eight
years. His weekly theater review, Second Row
Center, is heard on Wednesday mornings and
evenings on KRCB-FM during Morning Edition
and All Things Considered, and he’s a regular con-
tributor to our new Arts magazine radio show,
Arts ID.
David’s contributions to KRCB began with his
Twisted Christmas productions—an annual live
event that brings notable actors and entertainers
to the Glaser Center stage to read off-kilter holiday stories—which are recorded and
produced for holiday broadcasts on Radio 91. This year, he’s working with us to
produce a Best of Twisted Christmas edition to offer to radio stations across the coun-
try. But David—for all his talents—may end up being best known at KRCB for his
radio serial chronicling the adventures of Tim Ticker, Intergalactic Handyman which
debuted during the Radio 91 membership drive last September. We hear that Tim, like
David, plans on continuing his collaboration with KRCB for light years to come and
for that—as well as for all his creative contributions—we are deeply grateful.

For information on becoming a KRCB volunteer contact Cheryl Scholar at

707-584-2005 or email at cheryl_scholar@krcb.org.
