SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF FINE AGGREGATES

Pycnometer has been used to find out the specific gravity of the sand. Specific gravity of
the sand was found to be 2.7 from IS:2386(part 3).
The following procedure as undertaken to find the specific gravity of fine
aggregates:
•Find the weight of the empty dry Pycnometer (w1).
•Fill the Pycnometer with 500 gms of oven dry sand and weight (w2).
•Now fill the same pycnometer with water and find the combined weight of
Pycnometer , sand and water (w3).
•Empty the Pycnometer, clean it, dry it and now find it’s weight by fitting it with water
upto top(w4).
•Weight of empty dried Pycnometer, w1.
•Weight of soil and Pycnometer, w2.
•Cumulative weight of Pycnometer bottle, sand and water, w3.
•Weight the empty Pycnometer bottle and water together as w4.
•Specific Gravity =(w2-w1)/ ((w2-w1)-(w3-w4)).
SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF COURSE AGGREGATES
Specific Gravity of coarse aggregate has been found using IS:2386(part-3).
The following procedure was undertaken to find the specific gravity of
course aggregates:
• Weigh two kg of aggregates and wash it .
• Place in wire basket and immerse in distill water.
• To remove the entrapped air, basket is lifted 25mm above base of tank and
dropped 25 times at rate of 1 drop per second.
• Leave the basket and aggregates in water for 24 hours.
• Find the combined weight of basket and sample while it is suspended in
water(A1).
• Remove the basket and aggregate from water and soak it dry.
• Find the weight of empty basket(A2).
• Find the weight of surface drained aggregates(B).
• Place aggregates in a shallow tray and keep in ovem at 100-110 degree celcius
for 24 hours. Remove the aggregates from oven and weigh them(C).
