TERMINOLOGY

USED IN CROSS CULTURAL HRM


TERMS
 CULTURE
Integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that is both a result of and integral to the human
capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations.
 CROSS-CULTURE
Any intervention aimed at increasing an individual’s capability to cope with and work in foreign environment.
 BENCHMARKING
It is a process used in management and particularly strategic management, in which organizations evaluate various
aspects of their processes in relation to best practice, usually within their own sector or industry.
This allows organizations to develop plans for adopting and adapting such best practice for increasing their
performance.
 POWER DISTANCE
Degree of inequality in power between a less powerful individual and a more powerful one in which they belong to
same social system.
  MASCULINITY vs. FEMINISM
refers to the distribution of emotional roles between the genders.
 UNCERTINITY AVOIDANCE
It is the extent to which a culture programs its members to feel either comfortable or uncomfortable in unstructured
situations

 INDIVIDUALISM vs. COLLECTIVISM
It is the degree to which individuals are supposed to look after themselves or remain integrated into groups usually around the family .
 LONG TERM vs. SHORT TERM ORIENTATION

refers to the extent to which a culture programs its members to accept delayed gratification of their material, social and emotional needs .
 UNIVERSALISM

In a Universalist culture, a rule cannot be broken and is a "hard fact", no matter what the relationship with the person is.
People in universalistic cultures share the belief that general rules, codes, values and standards take precedence over particular needs and
claims of friends and relations.

PARTICULARISM
 

Particularist societies tend to be more flexible with rules, and acknowledge the unique circumstances around a particular rule

 DIFFUSE
It shows "how far we choose to get involved". In a very diffuse culture, a large part of the life is regarded as "private", where other persons
without explicit consent have no access.
 EXPATRIATE
Someone who has left his or her home country to live and work in another country. When we go to another country to live, we become expatriates or expats for short
