1905- Player piano (Plays itself) gets invented, most popular automated
instrument in world

1906- 78 RPM Records, Precursor to the album, needle, hard, thick, little box
put a disc on, volume adjustment

1925- Record companies develop higher sound quality recordings, record


sales rise

1928- RCA buys out Victor, one company producing records and commercial
radio

1930- Depression, record items become luxury items, sales go down, 33 and
one third RPM record discs

1933- FM Radio tries to make launch but RCA,

1943- polyvinal fluoride

1947-48- RCA Launches first vinal disk, 12 inch disk, more room on disk,
more room, more songs on record, RCA counters with 45 inch disk,

1958- 98, 45 and a third inch disk

1964- Cassette have a commercial breakthrough, manufactured from


Phillips, they standardize every format

1979- Cassete getting more popular, sony walkmen comes out (cassette
version)

1978- Phillips and Sony work together to form a new standard format, The
CD
1981- MTV is formed, Michael Jackson put MTV in business

1982- Record companies and the powers that be , ensure that cd’s become
standardized, first CD album released by Billy Joel’s 52 nd Street

1984- 2 years after first CD, First CD portable player

1988- CD sales for first time surpass , 80’s become most explosive music
decade in music history,

1990- MP3 is formed, digital audio and internet meet eachother

1992- man, paid 2 percent recording rate to compensate to the ease of


piracy,

1993- Some law suits, record companies sue Compus Serve, they believe
allows users to download user files without privacy

1995- Streaming music

1997- Capital records announces intentions to downloadable form on


internet, one month before single goes to retail to see how interesting music
is to the internet, Capital Record , AUG- Announces next album only
available through internet, sells 100,000 units

1998- Sahan, develop a portable MP3 player

1999- Napster is Born, Sean Carper and Sean

2001- Napster Shutdown, RIA sues, IPOD created

2003- US District, Itunes created


2000- USB Flash Drives become popular

2005- Youtube created

2009- Music Industry Revenue 17 Billion
