    CHAIRMAN-ELECT KWAME R. BROWN VOWS TO MAKE TOUGH BUDGET CHOICES

    “Our city is experiencing the most severe financial challenges it has faced in more than a
    decade. As Chairman-Elect I will lead the Council in making the tough choices necessary to
    tackle more than just the immediate $188 million shortfall for Fiscal Year 2011 and shoring
    up $50 million in cash reserves.

    I will ensure that the Council, as a co-equal branch of government, will thoroughly review
    the city’s long term financial health, and approve spending measures which are fiscally
    responsible to allow the District to persevere in a struggling economy. Solving the financial
    crisis the District now faces will mean more than just quick fix cuts to city services.

    Although the focus is currently on the Fiscal Year 2011 budget, we must prepare now for
    the Fiscal Year 2012 budget. In one of my first acts as the Chairman-Elect, I will introduce
    tomorrow the Fiscal Year 2012 Budget Submission Requirements Resolution of 2010. The
    measure will require the Mayor to submit the proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2012 by
    April 1, 2011.”
