Homework 1

Wireless Networks (09/21/2010)

Sandhya Jognipalli

1. How is an ad hoc network different from a cellular network?

Cellular Networks Ad hoc Networks

Features/Services Voice and data through Group of people come
handheld phones together for a short time to
share data
Coverage Area Continuous coverage limited Equal to that of local area
to metropolitan regions network, but without fixed
infrastructure
Limitations Available bandwidth is very Limited range
low for most data intensive
applications

Cellular networks require fixed infrastructure to support the communication between mobile
nodes where as ad hoc networks do not require fixed infrastructure. Topology of wireless ad hoc
network is dynamic. Cellular networks require serious and careful topology design.

2. What are the pros and cons of having different-size cells for wireless networking?
Larger zone: Requires huge amount of power and less interference.
Smaller cell size: Increases capacity as well as network burden
Interference between same color cells
High power transmitter and low power consumption.
More users can be accommodated in the network.

3. What are the similarities between frequency hopping and TDMA?

Frequency hopping is the combination of frequency and time division multiple access. One user
uses one channel for a predefined time period and then changes to another channel for
transmission in frequency hopping. In TDMA one channel is used by several users, with base
station assigning time slots for different users.
Similarities between frequency hopping and TDMA are fixed time slots and frequency.

4. If a total of 33 MHz of bandwidth is allocated to a particular cellular telephone system

that uses two 25 kHz simplex channel to provide full duplex voice channels, compute the
number of simultaneous calls that can be supported per cell if a system uses
(a) FDMA
(b) TDMA with 8-way time multiplexing
Assume that additional bandwidth is reserved for the control channels.
The number of simultaneous calls that can be supported per cell if a system uses
(a) FDMA
33 MHz 33∗10 6 33000
= = =660 c h annels
25 KHz∗2 25∗10 ∗2 3
50

(b) TDMA with 8-way time multiplexing

33 MHz 33∗106
(
25 KHz∗2 ) (
∗8 =
25∗103∗2 )
∗8= ( 33000/50 )∗8=528 0 c h annels
