1. (a) What do you mean by potential difference and point out its salient features?
(b) An electric dipole represented by 0.1ay nC-m is at the origin. Find out the potential at a point
P(0, 10, 0). [8+8]
2. (a) Obtain an expression for the energy density in the field of a solenoid.
(b) Find the energy stored per unit length in the internal magnetic field of an infinite long straight
wire of radii 2 mm carrying uniform current 10 A. [8+8]
3. (a) Prove the Maxwell’s equation ∇ · B = 0.

(b) If H = 10 cos 1010 t − βx az A/m, find B, D, E and β when µ = 2×10−5 H/m, ∈= 1.2 ×
10−10 F/m, σ = 0. [8+8]
4. (a) Define wave polarization and describe different types of polarizations.
(b) The electric field of a plane wave propagating in a medium is given by E = 4.0 e−αx cos(109 πt
- βx)az V/m. The medium is characterized by ∈r = 49, µr = 4 and σ = 4 mho/m. Find the
magnetic field of the wave. [8+8]
5. (a) Explain the following:
i. Total internal reflection
ii. Surface impedance
iii. Poynting Vector.
(b) Find the depth of penetration, δ of an EM wave in copper at f = 60Hz. For copper, σ = 5.8 ×
107 mho/m, µr = 1, εr = 1. [12+4]
6. (a) Explain the field equations for TE waves in rectangular wave guide. Define dominant mode.
(b) If a wave of 6GHz is propagating between two parallel conducting plates separated by 30mm, find
the cut-off wavelength, guide wavelength for TE10 mode.

7. Derive the relationship between Zo and primary constants of a line. [16]
8. (a) Obtain the expression for average power Pavg in a transmission line in terms of its characteristics
impedance.
(b) A 40 m long transmission line is fed by 15V source. It has Z0 = 30+j60Ω, Load voltage VL =
56 − 480 vrms. If the line is matched to the load, calculate the input impedance & propagation
constant. [6+10]
