LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE

Pastor’s Blog 10-08-2010
Dr. John M. Ward, Pastor
Wayside Christian Church

It was a stormy night on the high sea. The captain tried to navigate his ship the best he could, but
it seemed that everything he did only further served to expose his difficult situation. He was
somewhere close to land, but it also meant that a wrong turn would cause his ship to be torn to
pieces by sharp rock formations. He was desperate to find his heading, but with the sea turning in
every direction, it was impossible to determine the right way to go. To make matters worse, a
thick fog rolled in on his vessel and he could no longer see what was ahead of him. He knew he
was going somewhere but without a heading, there was little hope of steering the ship safely
towards land.

But just when the captain’s situation seemed hopeless, a light appeared in the distance. His
instinct told him to just follow the light. With great difficulty, he navigated the ship towards the
small light. As he got closer to the light, he realized that it was a lighthouse. He knew then that
although the storm was just as difficult as it was before, he at least had a chance to succeed if he
just followed that light. Years later the captain would look back on that time and wonder just
how he would have ever made it without that shining light.

If you’ve been living for any length of time, don’t be surprised to find out that you’re being
watched by someone who may look up to you. It may be a child looking for a role model or an
adult looking for guidance. What kind of light will you be? Will you be like a lighthouse when
someone really needs your advice and guidance? Or will you be a bad example that leads them to
sharp rock formations. The Bible teaches us in Matthew 5:16 to let our light shine before men,
that they may see our good deeds and glorify our father in heaven. Remember, your actions are
your light. Let your light glorify God.
