Learning Goal WI Model Academic Standard: English Language Arts/Vocabulary

Standard) 4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning
words and phrases based on
grade 5 reading and content, choosing flexibly
from a range of strategies.
a. Use context (e.g., cause/effect relationships and comparisons in text)
as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
b. Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as
clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., photograph, photosynthesis).
c. Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries,
thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation and
determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and
phrases.
Instructional Students will be able to understand the meaning(s) of new vocabulary
Objective(s) words by consulting reference materials and be able to demonstrate a
clear understanding by the vocabulary words in newly constructed
sentences.

Assessment Observation of students using reference material and examination of


(Criteria/Look Fors) written assignment (vocabulary grid sheet).

Materials Book: Black Bears by Sarah Jane Brian, dictionaries (electronic and
book forms), and vocabulary grid sheet.

Time Total time expected for this lesson is 10-15 minutes

Procedures

Introduction I will open the lesson by asking the students questions about The book
Black Bears. I will then ask the students open ended questions about
the book and listen to their answers.
Developing the
Lesson I will explain the procedure of the lesson to the students.
Demonstration, I will ask the students to find all the vocabulary words in their books
Participation, and then to cross reference the word(s) with the reference (dictionary)
Practice in order to formulate new sentence using the vocabulary words. I will
make accommodations for students who may be having a difficult time
by working with them individually or by having them work with
another student.

Closure I will end the lesson by asking questions about the usage of references
and how they can use these references in future readings to help them
comprehend future literature they may encounter.
