Cellular respiration has three main steps:
1. Glycolysis breaks down glucose into pyruvate, producing a small amount of ATP even without oxygen.
2. If oxygen is present, pyruvate undergoes aerobic respiration through the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain to produce much more ATP. If no oxygen is present, pyruvate undergoes fermentation to produce lactate or ethanol and ATP.
3. The Krebs cycle and electron transport chain occur in the mitochondria, while glycolysis and fermentation can occur in the cytoplasm. All three steps are essential for harvesting energy from food that is then used to power cellular work.
