Observation
The author has pointed out a discrepancy
between the cognitive evaluation theory
and Inequity theory.
Experiment : to prove his findings that the
theories are not conceptually discrepant
Cognitive Evaluation Theory
This theory focuses on:
A person’s cognition of evaluating the
activity and the reasons for his
engagement in that activity
the locus of control of a person
Inequity Theory

When outcomes are When outcomes are less

greater than inputs INEQUITY than inputs

Greater Outcomes
Focus of Research (Over
paper is on compensation)
The LINK
They person will not
do overtime work
Cognitive
even
Evaluation
overcompensated, as
theory
the motivator for
work is money now
(extrinsic motivator)

If a person is
overcompensated
Inequity than he would do the
theory overtime work for no
money to restore
inequity
Hypotheses
1. When a person is provided with money to
perform a task his intrinsic motivation
decreases
2. When a person is provided with verbal
reinforcement his intrinsic motivation will
increase
3. If a person performing an intrinsically
motivated task feels inequitably overpaid, he
will increase his performance to restore
equity
Method
Subjects were fresh graduates
Puzzel ‘SOMA’ was given to be solved,
free time (break) was also provided to
check the intrinsic motivation
Method
They were evaluated on basis of
following conditions:
◦ Rewarded/Not Rewarded with money for
solving
◦ Rewarded/Not rewarded with money before
the free time
◦ Only Verbally rewarded
◦ Verbally rewarded in combination of one of
the three
Results
Strong relationship between intrinsic
motivation and verbal reinforcement that
it increases up to a certain point but then
decrease
Money decreases the intrinsic motivation
Gender differences matter
Conclusion
Person who want to enhance the motivation of students, employees or children
should focus on

Should concentrate less

Structuring situations Large payments could
on external control
that are intrinsically lead to higher
systems such as
motivating , rewarding performance to restore
monetary rewards that
and personally inequity but decrease
are linked to
supportive intrinsic motivation
