sells for $264,500 at recent
auction.
The sports memorabilia market may not
be what it was. But if you hang onto things
long enough, you will cash in.
The baseball Babe Ruth hit, his 702nd
home run, sold at auction for $264,500 US
last week. Ruth hit the home run in 1934
and later signed the ball. It had been
passed down by three generations of a
Minnesota family before going to the auc-
tion block.
Meanwhile, the bat used by Kirk Gibson
of the Los Angeles Dodgers to hit that
iconic homer in Game 1 of the 1988 World
Series sold for $575,912.
A Cy Young autographed bat from the
1903 World Series sold for $138,000,
while a Marilyn Monroe autographed
photo signed to former husband Joe
DiMaggio sold for $63,250. The picture
was from the Yankee star’s personal estate
and considered to be among his most cov-
eted possessions.
Madoff’s Loot Brings In $2
Million
His name may be disgraced, but his be-
longings still have a market. Bidders eager
for swindler Bernie Madoff’s loot laid out
more than $2 million at a U.S. Marshals
Service auction in New York this past
weekend. His wife’s engagement ring sold
for $550,000, way above its $200,000 es-
timate, and his monogrammed velveteen
slippers brought in $6000; even his boxer
shorts and socks sold for $1700.
It took more than nine hours for the 500
lots to be dispersed. Items small and large
were in demand, from Madoff’s Belgian
brand shoes ($2900) to his Steinway
Grand piano ($42,000). Why the feeding
frenzy? “It’s got a little bit of history to it,
“ said John Rodger, the real-estate devel-
oper who bought the Steinway. “And it’s
hysterical.” Except perhaps, to Madoff’s
victims who—even after the sale—remain
billions of dollars in the hole.
