“In late April 1914, my father sent tickets for
my oldest brother and sister. Reuven and
Feigel left for America. It was hard for my
mother to send off two young children, ages
fourteen and thirteen. We cried. My mother
told us to have hope, that our father, brother,
and sister would do everything in their power
to bring us together in America. Through
them we hoped to leave for America too. But
everything stopped when the First World War
began. They closed the borders and we lost
each other.”
