Remote sensing was used to assess the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill from the Deepwater Horizon rig. Satellite images from MODIS and RadarSat captured the extent and movement of the spill over time, showing oil on nearby shores and how ocean currents affected the spill's spread. Combined images on May 18th provided additional data on the spill's impact and movement across the Gulf.
