• EQ: How are electricity and magnetism

related?

• FF: Which cloud prefix indicates rain?

– Which type of cloud indicates a warm front?

• HW: p. 198 – Current can Make a Magnet

Electricity and Magnets
• Every magnet has a magnetic field
– Pushes or pulls without touching
• Electric currents – electrons moving through a
conductor
Electromagnets
• An electric current
flowing around an iron
core forms a magnet.
• An electromagnet is
formed when an electric
circuit is wrapped around
an iron core.
• The magnet loses it’s
magnetism when the
current stops flowing.
Assignment
• Design an invention that uses an
electromagnet to do something USEFUL.
• It must make SENSE! You cannot use an
electromagnet to power a light bulb for
example. Think about what a magnet can do.
• You should draw a picture of your invention
and write a paragraph about what it does.
