• Standard: 6-5.6 Recognize that a force has the

ability to do work.

• EQ: How are work and force related?

• FF: How are mass and weight different?

• HW:p. 171 in Science Workbook

Spring Scale
Energy is a property that enables something
to do work.
• Work means
1. To apply a force to an object over a distance.
2. The object moves in response to the force.

• An evidence of energy is when work is being

done.
– Ex.
• When a toy car at rest is pushed, work is done on a
car if it moves. This work is evidence of energy.
What is a force?
• Force – a push or a pull
• Force is measured in Newtons (N) using a
spring scale.
• Weight is a force.
How to calculate work
• Work = Force (Newtons) x distance (meters)
• Work is measured in Joules (J)
Try this:
• Come up with a way to determine how much
force is required to pull a your weight 1 meter
off the floor.

• Calculate the amount of work done.

– Work = Force x distance
Story
• Write a story – Work
discussing the – Newton
relationship between – Energy
force and work. – Spring Scale
• Use yourself as a – Mechanical Energy
character. – Potential Energy

• Use the following
