Contest Rules
 Contest is open to 3rd-
12th grade Chicago
Public School students.
 Only one entry per
student.
 Poem must be student's
original work.
 Poem must be between 3 Photo by Dan Rest

and 12 lines in length.
 All entries must be
submitted on 8.5x11”
paper.
 All entries must have the
following information on
the back of the poem:
-Student Name
-Student School
-Teacher Name
-Grade
 Poems will be judged on
creativity/originality,
language/rhyme, and
appropriateness to theme.

Each January, the historic Auditorium Theatre presents Too Hot To
Handel: The Jazz Gospel Messiah as a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. This year, we would like to invite CPS students grades 3-12 to
write a poem celebrating MLK’s vision of the beloved community. What
does beloved community mean to you? What is community?
Finalists will be chosen for grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12. The winning
poets will be honored with a certificate, published copy of their poem in the
Too Hot to Handel program, and two tickets (for the student and a
chaperone) to a performance of Too Hot to Handel at the Auditorium!
All entries must be received by Friday December 3, 2010

Students in grades 9-12 only may submit their poems by email to
education@auditoriumtheatre.org
