INTRODUCTION

• If the mechanical energy is converted into pressure

energy by means centrifugal force acting on the fluid,
the hydraulic machine is called centrifugal pump.
Construction
• Impeller: The rotating part of pump.
• Casing: It converts kinetic energy into pressure
energy before leaving the casing.
• Suction pipe:
• Delivery pipe
Centrifugal Pumps

• Liquid forced into

impeller
• Vanes pass kinetic
energy to liquid: liquid
rotates and leaves
impeller
• Volute casing converts
kinetic energy into
pressure energy
Impeller

• Main rotating part that provides centrifugal

acceleration to the fluid
• Number of impellers = number of pump stages
• Impeller classification: direction of flow, suction type
and shape/mechanical construction
