Introduction
 Over the years behavioral scientists have
observed that some people have an intense
need to achieve, perhaps the majority, do
not seem to be as concerned about
achievement.

 The need for achievement is a distinct

human motive that can be distinguished
from other needs. More important, the
achievement motive can be isolated and
assessed in any group.
FACTORS IN MOTIVATION
Goals and perception are the main factors in
Motivation .
 GOALS
Outcome orientation: Defeating others
Task orientation: Improving on past
performances
 PERCEPTION
How does a person think they compare . Theory
holds that individuals can have a need to get
ahead, to attain success and to reach objectives
CHARACTERISTIC OF HIGH ACHIEVERS

 They like situations in which they take

personal responsibility for finding solutions
to problems.
 Tend to be moderate risk-takers rather than
high or low risk-takers.
 Want concrete feedback on their
performance.
 Often tend to be loners, and not team
players
Ways to develop high-achievement needs
 Train people to Obtain feedback on performance
 Use the feedback to make efforts in areas where
they are likely to succeed
 Emulate people who have been successful
achievers
 Develop an internal desire for success and
challenges
 Daydream in positive terms by picturing
themselves as being successful in the pursuit of
important objectives
Why do achievement-motivated people
behave as they do?

 This is because they habitually spend time

thinking about doing things better.
 In fact, whenever people start to think in
achievement terms, things start to happen.
 Achievement-motivated people tend to get
more raises and are promoted faster because
they are constantly trying to think of better
ways of doing things.
 Companies with many such people grow faster
and are more profitable
Rewards and achievement-motivated people

 Achievement-motivated people are

more concerned with personal
achievement than with the rewards of
success.
 They get a bigger "kick" out of winning
or solving a difficult problem than they
get from any money or praise they
receive.
