Cell Life Cycle

Cell Cycle
- the series of changes a cell goes through from the
time it is formed until it reproduces, encompasses
two major periods:

interphase, in which the cell grows and carries on

its usual activities, and cell division,

and the mitotic phase, during which it divides into

two cells
Interphase
Subphases
• G1 (Gap 1)

• S (Synthesis)

• G2 (Gap 2)

• G0 (Gap 0)
G1
• G1 phase: The period prior to
the synthesis of DNA. In this
phase, the cell increases in
mass.
S
• S phase: The period during
which DNA is synthesized. In
most cells, there is a narrow
window of time during which
DNA is synthesized.
G2
• G2 phase: The period after DNA
synthesis has occurred but
prior to the start of prophase.
The cell synthesizes proteins
and continues to increase in
size.
G0
• G0 phase: When the cell ceases
or stops to divide.
