• Mace Lawlace was a 110 year old big Indian
corporation.
• Producing and marketing Indian Made Foreign
Liquor (IMFL) for over 3 decades.
• Mr.Chengappa, B.Tech. from BITS-
improvements in the operations and
management by introducing quality
improvements.
The Mission

• Kalma plant to be the first unit in Mace


Lawlace to be ISO certified.
The Concern
• Based on the staff-
• Total Strength of plant - 200
• Non-managerial staff - 10 (out sourced)
• Managers, Supervisiors - 15 ( only 5 had
qualification above SSLC)
• Worker - 175 (Only 10 ,passed Std. 8. Nearly
50% had not finished Primary School)
Solution
• 4 MBAs as part of the company wide
Management Trainee program to Kalma Plan.
• Design and implement an ISO program at
Kalma.
• Personal participation in the design of QMS,
goals etc.
• Set up monitoring reviews with himself on
monthly basis.
The Result
• Complaints –
– Additional paperwork
– Productivity concerns.

• Major Complaint-
– The leading distributor of the premium brand of
the plant, 10 out of 60 cases contained waste
water.
What happened?
Individual Perspective

• Lack of understanding between employees.


• Inefficient communication to the employees.
• Reluctance among employees for doing
paperwork.
• Lack of industrial exposure/ knowledge of the
management trainees.
The Present Action

• Training the employees on the importance and


necessity of ISO for the plant.
• Initiating a management team lead by
experienced personnel.
• Reassessing the situation- doing SWOT.
