~ DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS ~
Introduction
Windows Media Player is a computer-based media program that enables users to store, manage,
and use personal media material. With Windows Media Player, users have the ability to duplicate
and create audio CD’s for personal use. This is done through the process of importing and
exporting music files from and to audio CD’s (importing is also known as ripping and exporting
is also known as burning).
Such audio file duplication will enhance your personal music experience by providing a backup
CD for your collection and allowing you to keep audio CDs in the locations where you use them
most often.
Windows Media Player allows you to import or rip audio files from an audio CD to the program’s
file storage database, the “Library.” This makes it possible for you to access the audio files from
your computer for use. By ripping audio files to Windows Media Player, you now have the
opportunity to export or burn these files to another audio disc (for personal use).
Always make sure that your computer is connected to the internet during the ripping process.
When connected to the internet, Windows Media Player will add media information to audio files
6
that have been imported to the library. Such information will make it easier for you to locate and
manage the audio files.
Click on the “Start” icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. Select “Windows Media
Player” on the pop-up menu if it appears. If a “Windows Media Player” icon does not appear, click
on “All Programs” and locate “Windows Media Player” among the list of programs. Select
“Windows Media Player.”
The screen will now display a list of the audio disc’s songs.
22. Make sure tracks that you want to import from the CD’s song list are
checked.
On the left-hand side of each listed file is a small check box. The check box indicates which files
have been selected for ripping. All check boxes will be automatically marked to begin with. This
means that all files on the audio disc will be ripped to the library. In the case that you want to rip
only a few selected songs, simply deselect certain audio files that you do not desire to be ripped by
clicking on the corresponding check boxes. When a file’s check box is no longer checked, the file
will no longer be ripped to the library.
7
23. Click the “Start Rip” button at the bottom right corner of the screen.
Windows Media Player will now begin ripping the files to the library. This process will take
several minutes.
Simply open the computer disc tray and remove the audio disc.
Windows Media Player allows you to export or burn audio files from the library to a blank CD-R
disc. This makes it possible for you to duplicate a CD or create a CD with a new mixture of audio
files written onto it. NOTE: Burning a CD is legal for personal use ONLY.
25. Click arrow below the word “Burn” on the Burn tab and make sure
“Audio CD” is selected.
Windows Media Player makes it possible to burn audio files to CD’s of different formats. In this
case, a blank audio CD is the disc to be burned to.
8
Insert the blank audio CD that you wish to export audio files to (from Windows Media Player)
into the computer disc tray.
28.Click the Burn tab. This will pop up the Burn list on the right side of
the screen
In the “Burn” tab, the library will be displayed for you to see. Locate the music files that you
desire to burn to the blank audio CD.
29.Find the album that you just ripped to the library and drag it over to
the Burn list on the right side of the screen. You can easily find
albums and songs by using the search function.
Select the music files that you desire to burn by clicking, holding, and dragging them to the “Burn
List” on the right side of the screen. All music files on the burn list will be identified as ready-to-
burn files. The order in which they appear on the list is the order in which they will be burned to
the blank audio CD.
30.If desired, drag individual songs from different albums to the “Burn
List” at the bottom and right section of the screen.
9
31. If you would like to change song order, drag and drop selected tracks
within the Burn List.
Take the time to rearrange the files (by clicking and dragging up and down the list) to create a
playlist that satisfies your preference. NOTE: Blank audio CD’s can only support so many music
files, usually expressed in total minutes of audio. Know how much music your blank audio CD
can support prior to preparing the “Burn List.”
33. When you have finished the Burn List, click “Start Burn.”
The “Start Burn” button is in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and will start the burn
process. It will take several minutes for Windows Media Player to burn the music files to the
blank audio CD.
Windows Media Player notify you when the burning process is complete. If the CD doesn’t
automatically eject, push the eject button on or near the CD disk tray to remove it. Your audio
CD is now ready for use. Enjoy!
