Daniel Chen – Motyl Fiction

Daisy Khan skipped off of the last step of many steps in front of the office
building where she worked. Another place was on her mind. Daisy envisioned the
completion of the Park51, the 13 floor community center that she and her husband
had invested in. Pride filled up her heart as she imagined the community center,
despite the obstacles that lie ahead of her.
Daisy walked down the street towards her apartment. In her periphery she
notices an angry looking Caucasian fellow wearing a baseball cap quickly moving
towards her.
“Do you ever think about the families?” The man yelled. “What would they think?”
Daisy was not to be deterred. She believed that this unfortunate event was
deliberately engineered by God in order to test her. Daisy was determined to stand
her ground. She takes the rooftop elevator down to her floor, ready to take her
routine afternoon nap. Daisy closes the door behind her as she enters her apartment
and remembers that she should first recite her daily prayer, as required by all
followers of Islam in their holy book, the Quran. As soon as she drops her prayer mat
on the floor, she hears a muffled noise that startles her. Daisy is alarmed, but notices
a warming sensation in her abdomen and watches as blood permeates throughout
her clothes. She realizes that she has been penetrated by a bullet. A second shot
rattles the room, sending Daisy to the floor. The assassin emerges from living room
closet and enters the hallway.
