 Indefinite Articles:- A, An
 Definite Article:- The
 Indefinite Article:-
It usually leaves the person or thing indefinite.
e.g. A doctor – means any doctor.
 Definite Article:-
It normally points out some particular person or thing
e.g. The red house of the avenue.
A, An
 The choice between a and an is determined
by sound.
 “An” is used before a word beginning with a

vowel sound.
e.g. an inkpot, an enemy, an honest man,
an heir
 “A” is used before a word beginning with a

consonant sound
e.g. a novel, a boy, a yard, a university, a
European.
Uses of the Indefinite Article
 To represent a whole class.
 In it’s original numeric sense.
 Before the names of profession.
 To show the ratio.
Uses of the definite article
 To talk about a particular noun or one already referred
to.
 To represent a whole class by only one noun.
 Before superlatives.
 Before the names of the unique objects.
 Before the ordinals.
 Before some proper nouns.
Omissions
 Do not use ‘a’ and ‘an’ before
the plural and uncountable
nouns.
 Before the names of languages.
 Before the names of meals.
 Before the names of the
relations.
 Before the abstract nouns.
