PRESS STATEMENT

Shri Sriprakash Jaiswal, Minister of State (Independent charge), Ministry of Coal and
Statistics & Programme Implementation announced the release of the monthly Quick
Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for the month of October 2010
compiled by the Central Statistics Office. The index is a composite indicator that
measures the short term changes in the volume of industrial production. According to
the index, the industrial growth for the month of October’10 over the same period of
the previous year is 10.8%. The major three sectors that constitute the index are
Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity. The monthly growths of these three sectors for
month are 6.5%, 11.3% and 8.8% respectively.

He further informed that there was significant growth in the production of capital
goods at 22% and consumer durables at 31%. High growth of the output in Capital
goods was mainly due to the high growth in the production of Off shore platforms,
Ship building and repair, Electrical control panels, Laboratory & scientific
instruments, Electric generators and Turbines. Similarly, high growth in production of
Consumer durable goods was mainly due to high growth in the production of
Passenger cars, Motor cycles, Scooter & mopeds, Alarm time pieces and T.V.

The present growth rate of IIP shows that the revival of economic growth as started a
year back is continuing.
