GEN ED: LOCAL TO GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
(THEMES: "REGIONS IN GLOBAL CONTEXT" AND "PERFORMANCE OF CULTURE")
A CONTINUATION OF SNH 1040. FOCUS ON VARIOUS ASPECTS OF CULTURE, SOCIETY, LITERATURE,
TRADITIONS, AND DAILY PREOCCUPATIONS WITH CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATIVE
LANGUAGE SKILLS. REINFORCEMENT, EXPANSION, AND SYNTHESIS OF CONCEPTS OF LANGUAGE AND
CULTURE THROUGH CONTACT WITH AUTHENTIC MATERIALS.

PREREQUISITE: SNH 1030 OR SNH 1040, OR THE EQUIVALENT. LABORATORY WORK REQUIRED. (MULTI

PARTICIPATION:

25% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE WILL BE DEPENDENT UPON YOUR PARTICIPATION IN CLASS. EVERY STUDENT IS
EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN CLASS ACTIVITIES. IN ORDER TO DO SO AND RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THIS COURSE,
YOU MUST DO TWO THINGS (1) COME TO CLASS REGULARLY & (2) BE PREPARED UPON ENTERING THE
CLASSROOM.

ATTENDANCE: YOU MAY MISS UP TO 3 CLASS PERIODS WITHOUT PENALTY . A FOURTH ABSENCE WILL CAUSE
YOUR FINAL GRADE TO DROP BY 5 POINTS. THE FIFTH ABSENCE WILL DROP YOUR GRADE BY 10 POINTS, AND
SO ON AFTER THIS PATTERN.

VOCABULARY, THERE WILL BE VOCABULARY QUIZZES QUITE OFTEN IN THIS COURSE. A T LEAST ONCE PER
WEEK THERE WILL BE A QUIZ, BUT THEY WILL BECOME MORE FREQUENT IF GRADES BECOME OR REMAIN LOW.

CULTURE & LANGUAGE PORTFOLIO:

THE CULTURE & LANGUAGE PORTFOLIO IS A SEMESTER -LONG PROJECT THAT WE WILL USE TO HELP US MOVE
THROUGH & SYNTHESIZE THE TOPICS OF THIS COURSE. IT WILL BE MADE UP OF THREE PARTS: (1) THE
REFLECTIVE J OURNAL, (2) REPRESENTATIVE ARTIFACTS, & (3) DRAFTS.

EACH SECTION SHOULD BE A DIVIDED & LABELED PORTION OF YOUR BINDER FOR THIS COURSE AND SHOULD
BE BROUGHT TO CLASS EVERY DAY. A FOURTH SECTION WILL CONTAIN YOUR NOTES & ACTIVITIES FROM
CLASSWORK AND HOMEWORK.

(1) THE REFLECTIVE J OURNAL: THIS PORTION OF YOUR NOTEBOOK WILL BE IN ENGLISH AND WILL CONTAIN
PROMPTED REFLECTIONS . THESE REFLECTIONS WILL BE PROVIDED AND ASSIGNED AS THE COURSE
PROGRESSES AND WILL ASK YOU TO THINK ABOUT AND WRITE ABOUT CERTAIN ASPECTS OF CULTURE AND
LANGUAGE .

(2) REPRESENTATIVE ARTIFACTS: THESE WILL BE CONCRETE REPRESENTATIONS OF THE CULTURE YOU ARE
LEARNING ABOUT. YOU WILL COLLECT AND REFLECT ON AT LEAST TEN OF THESE THROUGHOUT THE COURSE
OF THE SEMESTER . S OME ARTIFACTS WILL BE PROVIDED AS PART OF THE NORMAL COURSEWORK. S OMETIMES
YOU WILL BE ASKED TO FIND AN ARTIFACT BASED ON SOMETHING WE ARE WORKING ON WITHIN THE SCOPE OF
OUR COURSEWORK. ADDITIONALLY, THERE WILL BE SOME ROOM TO ADD ARTIFACTS BASED ON YOUR OWN
INTERESTS WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE CULTURE.

(3) DRAFTS: THIS PORTION OF YOUR NOTEBOOK WILL BE IN SPANISH. THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER, YOU
WILL BE ASKED TO RESPOND TO TEXTS AND ARTIFACTS IN S PANISH . THESE WRITINGS WILL GO THROUGH A
DRAFT PROCESS. IN OTHER WORDS, YOU WILL WRITE A FIRST DRAFT, GET SOME FEEDBACK FROM YOUR
WRITING GROUP, WRITE A SECOND DRAFT, GET SOME FEEDBACK FROM EITHER YOUR TUTOR OR
INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, AND WRITE A THIRD DRAFT. I WILL EXAMINE THE THIRD DRAFT AND YOU WILL
MAKE ANY FINAL CORRECTIONS FOR THE FINAL DRAFT. EACH DRAFT, WITH THE MARKINGS MADE BY YOUR
WRITING GROUP, TUTOR , AND MYSELF, MUST BE INCLUDED IN THIS SECTION ALONG WITH THE FINAL DRAFT.
THE PROCESS MUST BE REPRESENTED HERE, NOT JUST A FINAL PRODUCT.

(4) NOTES & ACTIVITIES : THIS IS WHERE YOU WILL KEEP THE NOTES YOU MAKE WHILE COMPLETING THE
HOMEWORK, THOSE YOU TAKE IN CLASS, AND THE ACTIVITIES YOU COMPLETE FOR BOTH. THIS SECTION IS
NOT GRADED, BUT MUST EXIST! BECAUSE THE TEXTBOOK FOR THIS COURSE IS ONLINE, YOU MUST MAKE

PRESENTATION: DURING THE FINAL EXAM PERIOD , EACH STUDENT WILL HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO SHARE WITH
THE CLASS THEIR FAVORITE PART OF THE PORTFOLIO. N O P OWER P OINT PRESENTATIONS WILL BE ALLOWED
BECAUSE OF TIME CONSTRAINTS . NO STUDENT MAY SPEAK FOR MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES. EACH STUDENT
MUST BE PREPARED TO PRESENT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EXAM PERIOD . THIS PRESENTATION WILL BE
GIVEN IN S PANISH AND SHOULD LAST AT LEAST TWO MINUTES. THE PRESENTATION NEED NOT BE SUPER
FORMAL. THIS IS BASICALLY A FINAL SHARE OUT OF REFLECTIONS ON CULTURE AND YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON
THE WORLD AROUND YOU. THE FINAL VERSION OF THE C ULTURE & LANGUAGE P ORTFOLIO WILL BE DUE
DURING THIS PERIOD. P LEASE BE SURE YOU HAVE COPIES OF ANYTHING YOU WANT TO KEEP AS THESE
NOTEBOOKS WILL NOT BE RETURNED TO YOU . P LEASE REMOVE SECTION (4) NOTES & ACTIVITIES, BEFORE
