❶ Desktop Management Interface
❷ DMI Architecture
❸ DMI Browser
❹ DMI/SNMP Mapping
❺ Setting up LAN Access
❻ SNMP Configuration
① DMI
• 1st Desktop Management Std. (DMTF)
• For managing and keeping track of H/w and S/w
components in a system of Pc's.
• Extension of the Basic Input Output System (BIOS) that
formulates and delivers information to the OS.
• Independent of H/w, OS as well as Management
Protocol
• Mappable to existing protocols such as SNMP.
Components of DMI
①Management Information Format

②Service layer

③Component Interface (CI)

④Management Interface (MI)

Management Information
Format
▪ Text file that contains specific information about
the H/w & S/w being used on a Computer

▪ Consists of one or more groups containing

attributes, which describe each component

▪ Each MIF file contains the standard component

ID group. This group contains the product name,
version, serial number, and the time and date of
the last installation.
Service layer
▪ It’s a memory-resident code that acts as a
mediator for the MI and the CI and allows
management and component software to access
MIF files in the MIF database.
▪ Must run all the time (designed to use less memory).
▪ Also includes a common interface called the
local agent, which is used to manage individual
components
Component Interface (CI)
▪ Its API that sends status information to the
appropriate MIF file via the service layer
▪ Commands include
º Get and Set command – modifies MIF as
needed
º Event command - notifies Management
S/w of critical events
Management Interface
▪ The management software communicates with
the service layer using the MI application program
interface. The MI allows administrators to issue
the Get and Set command and the List command
that lists all the DMI-manageable devices.
