Games stop being fun when someone is hurt, physically, emotionally, psychologica
lly. The rules are set up to ensure people are not hurt physically, but does tha
t mean we should just tolerate verbal and psychological abuse from others, and t
hat's why I take peoples' fun seriously, because it's worth it.
It's worth more to me that others should have fun rather than myself.
Call it a feedback loop, when I see someone else being happy and having a good t
ime, my own little "happy meter" goes up.
I am disturbed when I see that some people want moderator status so they can "en
force" their view of the world on others, that they would wish to repress, rathe
r than express.
I am further distressed when people lie about their true intentions for wanting
moderator status, once they achieve it they sit back like their work is done, an
d when they are called up on it they begin defending themselves with trite littl
e lines like "Why are you taking it so seriously? It's just a game, chill out.".
If you're unable to take your position as a volunteer supervisor seriously and w
ith intent, then you are unable to fulfill your obligations when you took the po
st, and should be removed from that position.
Still worse are those that believe the moderation powers are a toy, to use as th
ey please because "No-one was hurt.".
Do you use a power drill as a toy, to poke holes in walls because no-one will no
tice?
Do you really think that you're incapable of helping others with your abilities?
If you think that, then you should be turning your sight inwards, and see how y
ou can benefit others with your privileges, instead of looking to empower yourse
lf.
Not to mention you look like a complete dick while abusing your privileges, it a
lso weakens the status of moderators as a whole. We share a collective image her
e, that can be easily abused and mis-represented by a few sour apples. So it's i
mportant to always strive for your best, to treat other moderators with respect,
to treat those under you with dignity, and treat those above you with subservie
nce suiting your position.
We're all volunteers here, I see no-one getting paid to be a moderator.
But that doesn't mean we can't act like professionals.
And that's the end of my reasoning.
I wrote this because I've gotten a lot of comments, complaints and criticism for
my taking the game too seriously. I have no interest in playing Tremulous by my
self, and I am not interested in promoting anti-social tendencies in the game th
at would cause this.
If you have comments on this, PM me, do not post, I am locking this and will lin
k to it occasionally.
