SIMPLE MACHINES

LEVER

1. Simple lever consists of a rigid rod or bar which is free to turn about a fixed point
called the fulcrum.

2. This rod turns when a force called the effort is applied to overcome another force
called the load.

3. Figure 3 shows the three parts of a simple lever. They are effort (E), the load (L)
and the fulcrum (F).

THE MOMENT OF A FORCE

The moment of a force is the turning effect of force. It depends on ;

(a) the size of the force applied

(b) the perpendicular distance from the line of action on the force to the fulcrum

Formula for calculating the moment ;

Moment of a force = Force (N) x Perpendicular distance from the pivot to the force (m)

LEVER LAW

Load (L) x Distance of load = Effort (E) x Distance of effort

from the fulcrum (l) from the fulcrum (e)
