Brown v.

Board of Education (1954)

The plaintiff was Oliver brown and the defendant was the Board of Education. Oliver browns
name was picked for this case but he was one man out of around two hundred that were a part of
the NAACP cases brought before the supreme court. This case was about the discrimination of
people based on their ethnicity, religion, and their physical or cultural characteristics.

The Warren court decided on a unanimous 9-0 vote for Brown. The majority opinion of the
judges was that they did what they thought to be just, not what the people wanted. If left up to
the people this case would have been overturned. The other states involved were Delaware, south
Carolina, Virginia, and Washington D.C.

This case was a major stepping stone for African Americans in the United States. It got rid of
the legal basis for racial segregation in schools and other public places.
