Betsy Head Playground, Brownsville, Brooklyn, NY

Betsy Head is a large neighborhood park with a shady playground. The red painted area could
be converted into a skate spot, with enough room for a mini ramp and a few other simple ledge
and bench style concrete features.
Betsy Head Playground is in an industrial and residential area and occupies 10 acres on 2 city
blocks. There is a WPA-era pool house an Olympic pool, a Football field, basketball courts,
handball, running track, and rest rooms.

The potential skater area (yellow rectangle below) at Betsy Head is shady and in a good central
location in the park.
Nearby schools: PS 156 Waverly, PS 183 James, PS/IS 232 E. New York Prep, People’s
Elementary, PS 284 Wallace, PS 41 White, Brownsville Academy, Enya Community School, PS
184 Newport, Teachers Prep.

Brownsville is a neighborhood with a median income of $21,000 and 38% of families living below
the poverty line.

Directions: 3 train to Rockaway Ave station, 5 minute walk 3 blocks west on Livonia Ave, 1 block
north on Hopkinson Ave. The park is 40 minutes by subway from Union Square/14th St in
Manhattan.
Programming: Open Road will hire local skaters as skate clinic instructors at Betsy Head
Playground, and offer free school day and after school programs and events.
