Week 8

Monday
-Scripture of the Week: I Timothy 5:4, 8, 16
-“[B]ut if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to
practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return to their
parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God…But if anyone does not
provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied
the faith and is worse than an unbeliever…If any woman who is a believer has
dependent widows, she must assist them and the church must not be burdened,
so that it may assist those who are widows indeed.”
-Manner: We are responsible before God to take care of the widows in our own families.
-Discuss the Greek: some of it implies preparing beforehand (i.e., living life in such a way that one is prepared
for this event), some of it implies defending or providing necessary aid, etc. Children as well as grandchildren,
men and women, are all referenced here.

-“Four things are small on the earth,
But they are exceedingly wise:
The ants are not a strong people,
But they prepare their food in the summer.”
-Manner: It is wise to prepare for the future.
-Think about the concept: What does it mean to be prepared? What do you need in the

things you need? When you are grown, will Mommy do these things for you?

-Briefly discuss the “Little Ice Age” which followed the Medieval warming period, and extended into the mid-
1800s.
-Iceland was frozen and the sea ice went far out from the island itself
-Rivers froze so deeply that carnivals could be held on them and ice skating became very popular
-Greenland was so frozen that settlement was no longer possible and it was abandoned and/or the
people there died. It was not farmed again until at least 100 years later
-Entire harbors, such as New York Harbor, froze (that was in 1780)
-If you were a painter, and the weather was increasingly frosty, and you painted landscapes, what would you
paint? What would be your subject?

corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. Nor
shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your
vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the
LORD your God.”
-Manner: Do not take everything for yourself; leave something for others.
-If a farmer leaves something in his field, how does this help the poor? Does he pick it himself and give it to
the poor? Do you think it is good for the poor to have to come and get it? Has our family ever “gleaned” that
you can think of? Why would it be good for us to do some of the work ourselves? Explain dignity.

-Do you know what the word “fitting” means? Discuss. Do you speak
differently to an adult than to a child? Do you speak differently at a party than
at a funeral? Do you speak more loudly outside than inside? Than when folks
are awake, versus when they are asleep? Drive home the idea of propriety in speech.
