Ergotamine is used to prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage caused by uterine atony or subinvolution. It works by increasing the motor activity of the uterus through direct stimulation of the smooth muscle, shortening the third stage of labor and reducing blood loss. It should not be given to pregnant patients, those sensitive to ergot responses, or patients with hypertension or toxaemia. Common side effects include CNS effects like seizures, stroke, dizziness and headache, as well as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and respiratory effects. The dosage for adults is 0.2mg intramuscularly every 2 to 4 hours up to a maximum of 5 doses, or 0.2mg intravenously over 1 minute
