ANTHROPOLOGY: FINAL PROJECT

For your final project, you will be conducting an ethnography of a culture or subculture of your choice.

ETHNOGRAPHY is:

The fundamental research method of cultural anthropology. The written text produced to report ethnographic
research results. Answers central anthropological questions concerning the ways of life of living human beings.

Start by pick your subject, what group do you want your project to focus on?

GROUP:

What 3 essential questions do you want to focus on? Your questions should relate back to any of the topics we
have covered in class (culture, norms, values, ethics, music, language, communication, storytelling, ideology,
tradition, ritual, rites of passage, gender, sexuality, religion, race, ethnicity and taboo).

Your final project will have several different parts, as you finish each part, make sure you have me sign off on that
section.

PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION: You will need to find time outside of class to observe your group in person.
Remember to use the observation skills we worked on earlier this year. During your observations, take some notes
to help answer your three essential questions. You may also want to take some pictures to include in your final
project.

INTERVIEW/QUESTIONNAIRES: Create interview questions or a questionnaire to collect data from your group. You
may use any of the interview techniques we learned in class (formal, informal, ect.)

RESEARCH: You will need to research your group using the internet. Find at least 10 good sources of information
on your group and your three questions. Create a list of your ten sources of information.

PAPER: Create a short paper to discuss the information from your observations, interviews and research. Your
paper should be written in an ethnographic style (like the Nacirema paper). Your paper should answer your three
essential questions and use your research to defend your answers.

PRESENTATION: Create a presentation for your ethnography. Your presentation should cover the information in
your paper and everything you learned in your observation, interviews and research. You need to include at least
10 different pictures or images. You may do a power point, a prezi, a poster, a movie a collage or any other form
you like. POST YOUR FINAL PROJECT TO YOUR WEEBLY!
