 Definition

• From the words biological and diversity.

• Diversity is a characteristic of life

everywhere on Earth, from the ocean floor
to inside the human gut, from the global to
the microscopic.
• Biodiversity is the variation of life forms
within a given ecosystem, biome or for the
entire earth.

• Biodiversity is the variation of all life at all

of biological organization.
Location
 Types
• There are 3 types of biodiversity:
*Species diversity,
*genetic diversity and
*ecosystem diversity

• All three interact and change over time and

from place to place.
• Species diversity – Variety of different living
things.

• Genetic diversity – the variations between

individual of a species, characteristics passed
down from parents to their offspring.

• Ecosystem diversity – The great variety of

environments by the interaction of living
and non-living world.
 How it function
• Biodiversity occurs through species process,
genetic process and ecosystem process.

• For example in ecosystem diversity,

biodiversity function in environmental
processes = water cycle process, and the
interactions between predators and prey.
