@ Scattering cross sections are very small compared with absorption

cross section.

@ Variations of absorption cross sections with neutron energy are

represented by three regions:

(a) 1/V Region

(b) Resonance Region

(c) Fast Neutron Region

1/V Region
@ In the low energy range, the absorption cross section for many
nuclei are inversely proportional to the square root of the
neutron energy.

ıa = C*1/V

@ If neutron is moving with lower velocity then the probability of

absorption by nucleus is higher
Resonance Region
@ Following the 1/V region, there occurs the "resonance region" in
which the cross sections rise sharply to high values called
"resonance peaks" for neutrons of certain energies, and then fall
again.

@ These energies are called resonance energies.

@ It is the result of the affinity of the nucleus for neutrons whose

energies closely match its discrete, quantum energy levels.
Fast Neutron Region

@ Following the resonance region, cross sections gradually decreases

as neutron energy increases.

@ In the very high energy range total cross sections are usually less

than 5 barns each for the largest nuclei.
