The renaissance spread from Italy to northern European countries.
The spread of the renaissance to these countries was helped by the printing press, renaissance ideas and learning, which spread along the trade routes to northern Europe, visits by northern artists to Italy, and patronage by merchants and rulers in northern Europe. Albrecht Dürer became famous as both a painter and an engraver. Dürer was born in Nuremberg, the son of a goldsmith. After his training, he travelled in Europe, including Italy. He was appointed court painter to the emperor Maximilian, leader of the Holy Roman Empire. Dürer is noted for his self-portraits, his portraits and his studies of plants and animals. Dürer is famous for his engravings. His most famous engravings were The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, St Jerome in His Study, and The Knight, Death and the Devil. Dürer produced over 1,000 drawings and 100 paintings, and gave some of them away. Dürer painted plants and animals in great detail. His Large Clod, which shows a clump of grass, and his Young Hare are very realistic.
