    Briefing on Milestone 4: Detailed Process and
    Mechanical Design

     Each student is to design a major equipment identified in MS2.


    Without designing a major equipment a student will fail Milestone
    4.
     Detailed Equipment Process Design (Heat and Mass transfer,
    thermodynamics, chemical reaction, Separation processes) by
    rigorous and short-cut / quick estimation methods. Without doing
    rigorous method a student can pass but not score.
     Mechanical design (based on equipment size calculated by detailed
    design above): wall thickness, shape, weight, material of
    construction, nuts and bolts, welding etc.
     Schematic diagrams of equipment showing the layout of
    components using standard symbols. Drawing software
    Autosketch, Solidworks acceptable.
     Mechanical drawing on key equipment (General Arrangement –
    Engineering Drawing)
     Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (Control)
     Costing
     Auxiliary Equipment
     Pumps and Piping
     Compare with mass and energy balances of MS3 and make
    revisions.
     Compare with HAZOP/HAZAN of MS2 and make revisions.

    Report Due: Friday 25th Feb 2011


    Report size: 30 pages, font 11, Arial, Times New Roman. 1-1/2
    spacing.
