Martin Luther King Day Sunday:
“Reviving A Consideration of Nuclear Weapons in Honor of Dr. King”

Once it was only the fringe that called for nuclear disarmament. No more. Today a broad coalition is forming that is
calling for a reconsideration of nuclear weapons in view of the new threat of nuclear terrorism. Rev. Steven Martin, a
child of Oak Ridge who remembers being let out of school to protest President Jimmy Carter's motorcade through Oak
Ridge prior to the closure of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor project, will ask us to join in this thoughtful
reconsideration. How can current non-proliferation efforts, the new START treaty, and other efforts to secure nuclear
stockpiles make for a more secure world? How does Al-Qaida make nuclear technology more dangerous than ever?
How does Dr. King's legacy require us to tirelessly pursue justice and security for all the world's inhabitants?

Rev. Steven D. Martin is the Executive Director for The New Evangelical Partnership for the Common Good, a new a
faith-based nonprofit offering a renewed Christian public witness for the sake of the Gospel and the common good. He
has served United Methodist Churches as pastor for twenty years and is a graduate of Candler School of Theology. He
has produced several films for public television, including “Muslims in Appalachia,” “Islam in America After
September 11th,” “Theologians Under Hitler,” “Renewal or Ruin?”, “Hearts Divided: Baptism and the Jews in the
Third Reich,” and most recently, “Elisabeth of Berlin.” He has lectured at the prestigious Chautauqua Institute and in
churches and seminaries across the US.

CONNECTIONS
We will resume our Faith Formation groups on January 16. All groups will meet. The “Faith in Action” group
will count “Guest at Your Table” money today. Three adult groups are scheduled for January 16: “Spirit in
Practice, facilitated by Sarah Johnson” “The Art of Unitarian Universalist Parenting, facilitated by Tandy
Scheffler” and a new group in the “Spotlight Series.” For the first day, it will be “Spotlight on The Board of
Trustees” and will be facilitated by Hal Hoyt, President of the Board, along with other members.

The ORUUC Church Office will be closed on January 17, in honor of MLK, Jr. Day

You can buy your ticket for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Breakfast today – Please see Elizabeth Peelle, Melissa
unter, or Harold Waddle to buy your ticket! The breakfast will be Monday, January 17, at 8 AM and the cost is $5
per Ticket. It will be held at the former YWCA Building, 1660 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Coffeehouse Talent Show —
Friday, January 21, 7 PM
Wonderful entertainment, fantastic food & a
warm place to hang out! What else could you want
on a winter night? Please bring a snack or dessert
to share if you're able, but this is not required. The
event is free but donations will be collected for next
summer’s Youth Group Boston Trip. Beer and
wine will also be for sale. If you wish to be in the

ORUUC’s Annual Auction —
Saturday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 PM
The I LUUV ORUUC AUUCTION is
coming up the evening of February 5 at the church.
It's the church's biggest party and raises a lot of
money for our budget. We will once again have our
favorite auctioneer, Bear Stevenson; and in keeping
with the Valentine's Day holiday, Kim Kasten and
his swing band will be playing for your listening
and dancing pleasure.
Rummage Sale is February 25 and 26, 2011
Please start finding and saving your
contributions for our next rummage sale. We will
accept anything except weapons! We will start
accepting items at church on Sunday, February 20,
after church. Just so everyone can plan ahead, we
have set Saturday morning, February 19, as the day
we will pick up large items with trucks. Please
contact Betsy Bauer (bauerec@bellsouth.net, 482 -
5324) if you have items you would like us to pick
up that day, or if you can help pick up large items!

Stone Soup “Summit —
Wednesday, January 19, 5 PM
Stone Soup will meet for a midyear “Summit" to discuss
new marketing efforts to get the word out. We want to launch
some new marketing efforts. Please join us for soup, bread and
cookies if you have been involved with Stone Soup, would like
to get involved with Stone Soup, have ideas about marketing
and advertising, or if you'd like a bowl of good soup to try our
wares!
Financial Peace University —
Monday, January 24, 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Many of us have a secret financial life that we don’t
share and many of us are not proud of that part of our lives. If
you find yourself living paycheck to paycheck or worrying
about money on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis,
consider signing up for the Financial Peace University class
starting in January. Class will meet Mondays at 5:30 p.m. in
the East Room at ORUUC starting January 24th and will
conclude on April 18th. To sign up email or call Emily Smartt

"The Wellness Recovery Action Plan" —
Saturday, January 29, 9 AM to 3 PM
A One-day Positive Change Session led by Robin
Stone. Robin, a mental health professional in our church, will
offer a one-day session on "WRAP" (the "Wellness Recovery
Action Plan"), which helps participants identify ways that they
suffer and ways that they already know how to respond to their
own suffering—their already-developed coping mechanisms.
This is a system meant to help those who are ready to grow in
self-awareness, to take more responsibility for whatever they
are facing, and to learn better how to practice the healthy
responses that work best for them. To register, please contact
